Lift Truck Batteries

If lift trucks are a part of your daily operation, then understanding how these pieces of equipment work, as well as how to maintain them is crucial. One aspect of many lift trucks is the battery required to run the equipment. Learning how to handle these batteries is part of the overall maintenance, which is easy to learn, inexpensive, and of course, necessary for operation to continue.

Just as with most other lead-acid model batteries used for industrial applications, lift truck batteries is the main source of power. For an electric-powered lift truck to operate at low costs and at optimal performance, the batteries need to be charged and handled properly. In addition to power, these batteries also serve as counterweights in giving the lift stability.

Lift truck batteries are available in a number of different sizes and manufactured by many different manufacturers. No matter which brand you choose, you still need to understand the proper way for handling them to avoid injury. First, when charging these batteries, an explosive mixture of hydrogen and oxygen is produced.

Because the battery has a self-discharge feature, the gases are generated when not in use or when being charged. However, if that mixture on the inside of the battery should become ignited accidentally, then a serious explosion could incur. The thing to remember is that while the explosion is devastating, the flying debris is what causes most injury. To reduce that chance of this happening, only employees trained in charging batteries should be allowed to do so. Additionally, the employee should always wear acid-resistant gloves, eye, face, and hand protection, and so on.

Another possible cause of injury has to do with electrical shock. Keep in mind that no matter what size battery you have, if it is a lead-acid type, it can produce a dangerous shock. The way to avoid this is that before the battery is removed from the truck, the electrical circuit should be opened. Additionally, the battery itself should be unplugged and the brakes set. Finally, always make sure the battery is connected or disconnected from the charger, and the charger turned off.

Battery acid burns are another common problem seen in that the solution of water and sulfuric acid can not only burn clothing but also skin. If the burn is flushed with water immediately, it should not be too bad. However, if not taken care of properly or right away, then serious burn could occur. In this case, acid-neutralizing solutions such as household ammonia mixed with water or baking soda should be kept close by. Additionally, the area affected by the acid should be cleaned thoroughly. As you can see, a few steps can save serious injury from happening.
